Young Adult Recommendation:
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury
I love this book. First published in 1953, Bradbury grabs you from, “IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN” and never releases his grip on the reader during the unfolding of this uncomfortable but terrifically told futuristic societal commentary. Just as Jules Verne foresaw submarines and our dominance of the oceans, Bradbury foretells our own consumption by the dumbing and numbing down of our senses via our dependence on multimedia stimulation. Guy Montag is our tragic hero and you can feel him weep for everyone around him. You just hope he’s not weeping for you.
The recommendation of 14-years and older is only because the themes are sophisticated. There is no content that is inappropriate for a younger age; it simply may not yet be fully understood. Then again, this is a book that can be reread many times.
